" The Roaring Twenties, ” when those three words are heard what comes to mind? Probably flappers, forbidance, or gangsters quickly spring to mind, but what about Band-Aids, insulin, or medical insurance. Many life-changing and lifesaving discoveries in medicine took place in the 1920s. Some of the amazing discoveries had been insulin intended for the treatment of diabetes, the Band-Aid for treatment wounds, plus the iron chest for treating polio. To maintain these new medicines and treatments, the medical schools had to revamp their admittance requirements and curriculum. Health care insurance was developed to assist defray the rise in costs of looking for medical treatment. The advancements through the 1920s in the medical field brought about a better quality of life for everyone. With the expansion in technology and science study at colleges and clinics, several fresh discoveries had been developed in the 1920s. One of the outstanding discoveries was insulin for the treatment of diabetes since, " Before the discovery of insulin, a diagnosis of diabetes meant eventual coma and certain fatality, often which has a lifespan of only one month to two years. Doctors sooner or later found a near-starvation diet of a few hundred or so calories every day helped to increase some patients' lives with a year or perhaps two” (Wickford). In 1921, Dr . Fredrick Banting and Charles Ideal, successfully examined a pancreatic extract that had anti-diabetic qualities in diabetic pups. Once they filtered the insulin, the first-person to receive insulin was a 14-year-old diabetic young man who was close to death. After the first treatment his blood sugar levels dramatically decreased and he soon obtained his power and his urge for food. Insulin was considered a miracle medicine and the require was extremely high; " As soon as 1923, the firm was producing enough insulin to offer the entire North American continent. Even though insulin will not cure diabetes, it's one of the biggest discoveries in medicine”...
